Playing around with a Camera

Hey guys!

Yesterday my classmates and I were sent outside in groups to take pictures. We were told to play around and experiment with different shutter speeds and apertures on the camera.

My group members were Roshni, Rali and Stephen. Together we are going to post some of the pictures we took and explain some of or thoughts regarding them.

This is our best example of "depth of field". For this photograph we had used a lower f-stop which meant that the camera lens was wider and therefore focused on one thing. The shutter speed we used was much faster, this meant that less light was let in the camera when we took this picture. This allowed us to get a photograph that was not over or under exposed.

This was another photograph we took. This picture, we realized, was over exposed. We believe that the shutter speed was not fast enough; this let in too much light making the image brighter than we wanted it. We also did not focus on the right object when taking the picture. We feel that we should have taken a broader shot with a faster shutter speed to get more of the flowers in the background instead of the little pieces of grass. Though this image was over-exposed we did like the final product of it; It kind of looks like a painting.

This is our best over-exposed image. You cannot differentiate between the white of the water tower and the white of the clouds. We believe that the image could have been better if we made the f-stop higher. A slower shutter speed was good for this image because the subject matter is still; there is no motion. We did like, however, the composition of the image; the way that the vertical lines of the water tower contrast with the horizon line.

This is an example of an under-exposed photograph we took. We think that the f-stop was too high and that is why the image did not receive as much light as it was supposed to. If the f-stop was lower than the image would have been brighter.

These were some examples of the many pictures we took yesterday! We hope you enjoyed them!

Text Portrait - Photoshop Tutorial

Hey Guys!

Well, It's the middle of march break and I am completely bored! haha. It's basically one of those days where you end up spending all your time online because you don't have any plans for the day. Yup, its one of those days. Anyways, while I was sitting here bored, I realized that I am completely behind on my blog posts; oops :S.

So today, I have brought to you a tutorial I stumbled upon earlier this evening. This tutorial was written by Dave Cross in 2009 and I thought It was pretty interesting. Basically, he took a well contrasted picture and made it into a portrait made entirely of text through Photoshop CS4.

Cool right? I thought it was very interesting and being a Photoshop lover myself [haha], I decided that I wanted to make a portrait following this tutorial myself! So I took THIS picture of Hilary Duff which I found HERE and got going! Since this picture did not have the amount of contrast I required, I needed to use Photoshop to enhance the lights and darks of the portrait. Following the tutorial was not hard because the wording wasn't confusing and there were pictures to help explain the steps. In the end, this is how my portrait turned out!

I admit it's not as professional, but I thought It looked well done especially because I added some effects of my own. So personally, I liked how my portrait turned out in the end.

If you guys are interested in making your own portraits made entirely of text, please do visit THIS TUTORIAL and try it out. I would love to see the outcome! Good Luck!

How do you use Garageband?

Hey guys!

I am currently working on my first CyberArts year 3 tech assignment on sound editing. For this assignment we are required to use programs such as imovie and Garageband to edit and change the sound in a movie trailer of our choice.

Personally, I have worked with imovie before and know my way around the program; I do however have a problem with Garageband because I have not used it before. So, because of this I was recently browsing YouTube for tutorials on how to better understand Garageband and I came across this really helpful video.

This video, in my opinion, was very helpful because it showed the basic knowledge you need in order to work Garageband. This video was easy to understand; there wasn't anything too technical and it wasn't too long. Take a look!

Hope this video helped you! :)

If not, I have a tip for you; play around with the program. It may be simple but it works! I've noticed that if you learn by experience. So, just open up the program, fiddle around with the options and buttons and see what happens. This will help you get a feel of where everything is and what it does. Trust me, it works!

Oh! If you're wondering about this assignment of mine, I promise that I will explain it in much more detail soon and will post my final edit after I am done! :D

Bye!

Glitter Text Tutorial

Hello!

Today, I am back with another Adobe Photoshop CS3 (and above) tutorial for you! Last time I showed you a coloring technique but today I thought i'd give you a fun tutorial. This time, I am going to teach you how to make a simple glitter text in Photoshop CS3 or above!

So let's start!

1. Open a new document in Photoshop by going into FILE > NEW

2. You may set the size to any size you would like, I chose 500 px by 500 px (You can always crop it later)

3. Take your text tool and type in anything you would like (I chose to write my name) and choose any colour you would like (except for black and white).

4. Rasterize your image by going into LAYER > RATERIZE > TYPE

5. Take your text layer and duplicate it four times.

6. Now to add a glitter effect, click on the first (most bottom) layer of your text. Go to FILTER > NOISE > ADD NOISE
Set the noise to 25%

Now click on the second layer from the bottom. Repeat the step above but set the noise for that one to 30 %

Repeat these steps for the next two layers. Layer 3 should have a noise percentage of 35% and Layer 4 should have a noise percentage of 40%.

6. Make sure your animation window is open by going into WINDOW > ANIMATION

7. There should be one frame on the animation window. Duplicate that frame so there are four frames.

Click on the first frame; hide the layers so only the bottom layer is showing.
Click on the second frame; hide the layers so only the second last layer is showing
Click on the second frame; hide the layers so only the third last layer is showing
Click on the forth frame; hide all the layers so only the first layer is showing.

8. Set the time of each of the frames to 0.1 seconds

9. Press play. your text should be glittering!

10. If you have blank parts around your text that you do not need, crop it out with the crop tool.

11. To save, go to FILE > SAVE FOR WEB AND DEVICES
Make sure you are saving the file as a gif.

YOU ARE DONE! :D

Here is what mine turned out like

Hope you liked the tutorial! feel free to leave any comments or questions! :)

HTML/CSS Help

Hello Everyone!

Today, I will tell you about my hero. The one that has saved me from going into depression. This is w3schools.com!

In the tech. portion of our cyberarts class we have been assigned to make a website portfolio of our best works for our culminating project. For this assignment we are required to code and add content to a web page using HTML and CSS.

Coming into this course I had very basic knowledge of HTML and had no idea how to code in CSS. So, when this culminating project was assigned I did not know how to start. This is where I went to google and started searching up some CSS and HTML techniques. The website that taught me the most was w3schools.com. It teaches you basic HTML and CSS coding and provides examples for you. Also, once you have figured out or mastered CSS and HTML it has all the information on Javascript and more. It just takes some time, effort and interest to learn!

Do check out the website if you are interested!

Website Critiques

Hello!
Today I will be critiquing two websites based on the 10 principles of effective web design. I will be telling you what a good website looks like and what a bad website looks like. I will also tell you why and I hope these elements will help you in the future if you would like to make or open a website of your own. Also, it would give you an opinion of an actual user and what they are looking for.

The first website I looked at was called Statistics Canada .

Statistics Canada is a bad website. Though it has a lot of information. It is not visually attractive. You click onto the website and you are hit with tons of links and text. The logo is stuck right in the top middle of the website (a bright red leaf), because of the bold colour of it, your eyes wander over to it, but don't want to move away because the red is so bright on the neutral and calm colour scheme. Also because there is so much text on the main page, you just want to click the little "X" on the top corner of your browser. You just don't have to patience to look around, it makes you have to think. There is a search bar underneath the logo so if you write specifically enough you may find what your looking for, but when you search you get A LOT of different links, again, its frustrating. There is a navigation bar but there are so many links around it, you don't know where to click. They have used white spaces in the background but then all the information is crowded in the middle on the page. It is an OK website, it has a lot of useful information but because the main page is so crowded and unattractive it doesn't make you want to look around. This isn't a very good website.

The second website I looked at was called facebook.

Facebook is a good website. This is because when you click onto the site, you immediately know what its about, it doesn't make the user think. They have their logo in the in the top right hand corner. So your eyes go immediately go to it. Then when your eyes scan down it tells you what the website is about "Facebook helps connect and share with the people in your life." Under that there is an image that shows people around the world being connected by lines. To the side, there is a part where you can register and above that, there is a sign in box. It's organized in a clean box like layout, with a cool and calm colour scheme. There isn't a lot of information being thrown at you either. When you come to this website you can either choose to sign in or register, there aren't any advertisements that distract your eyes, it focuses your attention. The good thing about this website is that you don't have to click into numerous tabs or links to find everything. The most important things or features are right on the main page. Another good thing about this website is that it guides you through the registration process, you fill in your name, email, password, gender and age. You then click "Sign up". That's it, its simple and the website guides you through the process so you don't get frustrated. This is a good website. It's simple, clear and easy to use. Which doesn't make you want to click the little back arrow on the top right hand corner or your browser.

A Photo Shop Tutorial :)

Hello Everyone!
Today, I made a Simple Adobe Photoshop CS3 Tutorial on colouring an image (but I assume it works on any other version of Photoshop). It is a step by step process that will teach you how to make this:

I have provided some screen captures to help. :)

1. First you save and open this image into Photoshop.

2. Then you go into Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Levels
This will pop up. Set the numbers to 37, 1.56, 234
Press OK

3. Next go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer> Colour Balance
This will pop up. Set the numbers to:
Midtones; -47, -27, +12
Shadows; -10, +4, +9
Highlights; -15, 0, -13
Press OK

4. Now go to Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Selective Colour
This will pop up. Set the numbers to:
reds; -20, +10, -15, +19
greens; +86, 100, 100, 100
Cyans; +2, 0, 0, 0
Whites; 100, +9, +41, -21
Neutrals; +9, +5, -9, -3
Blacks; +17, +16, +21, +11
Press OK

5. Go to your layers. Duplicate the layer and set it to soft light. To do that, left Click on the selective colour layer you just made. Press Duplicate. Click on the duplicated layer. There should be a drop down tab in the left corner of your layers window. Click it and press soft light. Your layer window should look something like this.

6. Next Take this texture (credit sanami276) and Save it onto your computer. Then, open it into Photoshop. If you would not like to save this image simply left click on your mouse and copy the image. Go into Photoshop and paste it onto a new canvas.

7. Resize the texture so it is approximately 500pxl in height. Now copy and paste this texture onto the image (It should be the top layer). Now set it to "Screen". It should make a lighting effect. You can move the texture around with your arrow tool and place it where it looks best.

8. Take the eraser tool and erase the lighting effects you don't need off the image (eg; the face).

That's It! Your Done! The Final Image should look similar to this.

I hope you enjoyed the tutorials! If you have any questions, feel free to lave me a comment, thank you! :)

Photoshop Tutorials :)

Hello Everyone!
I'm here with a bunch of Adobe Photoshop tutorials I have found on Outspoken-kate.com. Outspoken-kate.com in a blog written by a 20 year old girl named Katya. I stumbled upon her blog about a year or two ago when I first started using Photoshop. This blog was a lot of help because it covered a lot of the basics; adding text, blending images, using patterns and so much more. So if you have recently started using Photoshop and don't exactly know how to use it, this blog or website will guide you through some useful steps.

The thing I like about these tutorials is that they include pictures with the instructions. So if you are confused with the wording, you can figure out the problem by looking at the picture. Also, if you do not know if you are following the instructions correctly you can refer back to the images and see if your work and the tutorial images look the same.

I find this blog/website very useful. If you want to learn some cool Photoshop effects or need some simple tutorials, do check out this blog! (You can click on the link above)
